In Salinger’s short story, Just Before the War with the Eskimos, there are many words that can be confusing and unfamiliar to an adolescent reader. Originally, I counted 17 words that I was not able to comprehend, but listed here are 5 words, in order to save a bit of space.
1. Edification (noun) - the instruction or improvement of a person overall
2. Crevice (noun) - a narrow opening or fissure
3. Paraphernalia (noun) - a person’s equipment or personal belongings
4. Cordially (adjective) - courteous, gracious, friendly and warm
5. Ostensibly (adjective) - intended for display
To most people, this story happens to be a little confusing. But if you take some time to think about these questions, you may come to a better understanding of the story.
