In JD Salinger's short story, Just Before the War with the Eskimos, there are three main characters. One of the main characters is Ginnie, who is a fifteen year-old, generous, but judgmental young woman. At times, she can be worrysome, but logical, as well. Throughout the story, I picked up on Ginnie's social class, and it seems as if she is from a middle-class family. She is from a middle-class family because she works for her money, unlike Selena who is given money without doing chores. Another main character is Selena, who is a fifteen year-old, sweet, easy-going teenage girl. She is almost the opposite of Ginnie in the sense that Ginnie can be very worrysome, whereas Selena is very relaxed and in-control. Selena seems to come from a wealthy family because her father works for a tennis company. Another character is Franklin, who is Selena's 24 year-old brother. He is very lazy and has terrible manners. Franklin has not gone to war due to his bad heart and selfishness. As a result, he has been working in an airplane factory. He is very rude when having a conversation with Ginnie, and remotely displays that he had a liking for Ginnie's older sister. He does not seem to be very intelligent and is a very ignorant young man.
